A properly dressed polishing wheel polishes better, gives straighter lines, better edges, and gives you far more control over the surface of your piece. Your abrasives can actually work and you aren’t spreading around metal. In this quick demo I show how I clean, shape, and form my wheels so they actually work with the metal instead of fighting it. Small bench habits make the biggest difference in the final finish. Don’t be afraid to modify your tools. They are sold as “starters”. An easy way to prolong the life-span of your rotary polishers - a corundum dressing stone. The abrasive surface of this tiny little tool restores the cutting profile of silicone and rubber polishers. it quickly reveals fresh abrasive grit to ensure a smoother surface which is essential for using on silver and gold. ✨ As well as restoring the original shapes and grits, you can also create new ones from your existing polishers, including sharper points for when you need to reach into the tiniest of areas. I’ve been testing these new mini ceramic stones from @gesswein.jewelry At only 0.5 mm wide, they can really get into tiny details and little crevices that bigger tools just can’t reach. They’re also perfect for that moment when you spot one tiny imperfection and suddenly it’s all you can see. 😂 I’ve had a really good time experimenting with them! After using the 1200 grit, I found that following up with a homemade burnisher is a great way to rub that spot up to a nice, fine shine. (Thanks @kmbcustoms for that one!) What do you think? How to achieve a mirror-shine finish? - 220 grit to remove extra metal (keep moving while polishing so it doesn’t drill into the metal) Red abrasives - 600 grit purple abrasives - 1000 grit green abrasives - 2500 grit grey abrasives - 5000 grit white abrasives - polishing compound Dialux blanc - clean the pieces with down dish soup There you have it! Do any of you use a deburring tool? This tool is a great way to take that annoying edge off the insides of your ring bands. It peels a tiny swarf (yes, those little shavings are called swarf!) Right off the inner edge, making the band much more comfortable to wear. Once you deburr, you can give it a once over with whatever polishing method you use.
