I DEFINITELY gotta give a major S/o to my mother @marilynhaywood16 on this #ThrowBackThursday. Unbeknownst to a lot of people (including myself up until a couple of weeks ago), my mother was the featured vocalist on this jingle/commercial for @mcdonalds back in 1979. I believe my aunt @nanabiz was also a background vocalist on this jingle too! This particular jingle was the first of its kind that was specifically designed to target Black consumers of their products. Btw, my mother told me that I was literally still in her womb when she recorded this session too! She shared with me that this particular recording session is when her doctor suggested to her that she stay off of her feet until she gave birth to me. So, “technically” I was kinda a part of this session as well. J/k!! 🤦🏾♂️😂 All jokes aside though, this jingle was also produced by my late cousin Morris “Butch” Stewart who I was also related to through marriage. FYI, this jingle/commercial was the FIRST of MANY opportunities that the first ever Black owned/powered advertisement firm @burrell_comm provided to the whole Black creative community of Chicago back in the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. @burrell_comm served as a launch pad for many of us who had dreams and aspirations of entering into the entertainment industry back then. That said, I’m forever grateful to them for all of the opportunities that they provided to my family and I back then. We wouldn’t be where we are today as a family if it hadn’t been for firms like @burrell_comm giving us those opportunities to showcase our God given talents.
