All the Brontë sisters utilized the “Byronic hero” in their novels. This literary archetype popularized by Lord Byron was the dark, brooding anti-hero defying social norms while attracting others with their intense, passionate, and sometimes violent nature. For Emily Bronte, that was Heathcliff. Anne Brontë used the Byronic paradigm “not to titillate, but to shock.” Anne removed all the romance and showed the reality of living with a self-destructive husband, not thrilling or exciting. Like when the husband destroys his wife’s only means for an income, and therefore her means to escape. The Byron connection wasn’t just literary, but inspired by Anna Isabella Milbanke, the wife of Lord Byron. She also believed at first that her religious obligation was to improve her husband’s behaviour, but very soon became disillusioned, separated from him, and raised their child alone. All at time when leaving such a husband wasn’t just illegal, you would have to leave your children with him if he didn’t grant your request to leave with them. Hence why the main character in the book disguises herself by using her mother’s maiden name when she escapes with her son. She is then judged for making her own money selling her paintings. This was not even 200 years ago when women were fully the property of their husbands. After Anne’s death her sister Charlotte Brontë actively prevented the re-publication of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, causing it to go out of print for several years. Despite the novel being an immediate success upon its 1848 release, Charlotte believed its subject matter (which focused on brutal alcoholism, marital abuse, and a wife leaving her husband) was a “mistake” that should not be preserved. But Anne knew exactly what she was doing. “When I feel it my duty to speak an unpalatable truth, with the help of God, I will speak it — though it be to the prejudice of my name.” — Anne Brontë · 1848 I highly recommend the 1996 BBC Series “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” #brontësisters #tradwife #darkacademia #womenshistorymonth #regency

This is a great explanation of the Byronic hero- and what that actually means. Ironically enough, my ex husband and I went to a literature themed bed and breakfast for our honeymoon and stayed in the Lord Byron room… it was a warning sign I just didn’t realize it then 😂😂 Thank you @heathercolleyauthor for sharing! #byronichero #byronichero #toxicmen

Lord Byron the Romantic writer who created the Byronic hero and challenged conventional masculinity... Is a.. Mysogyn*st...surprise! Byron was infamous as a womaniser he had countless destructive affairs throughout his lifetime, with women who he would often treat with disdain and anger towards the ends of the relationship. One of the famous examples of this is his relationship with 18 yr Claire clairmont, who after having a brief affair he then refused to help support her and their baby unless she gave up custody of the child to him... Byron's treatment of women goes past his actions to the language he used.. "tooled to a post-chaise-in hackney couch- in gondola- against a wall- in a court carriage - in a Vis a Vis - on a table - Ans under it" was his remark about the lower class woman he had relations with. He often criticised female writers calling women's writing " feminine trash" and remarking that women who write were "spayed bi*chest". He also called his wife (the mother of coding Ada lovelace) with a "Mathematical blue devil" he regarded women writing as "feminine trash" and refused to acknowledge that he had grown up reading books written by women. Further sources that discuss Byron's treatment of women: Sources that discuss this include: Wordsworth Grasmere "Byron and his women: Mad, bad and very dangerous to know" Lord Byron and women's writing - Queen university Belfast #lordbyron #feministlitreture #exsposingthetruth #writerscommunity #womenstreatment #byronichero

Meet Tristan from my upcoming epic fantasy Sacred. 🌿 He’s a side character, but he wishes he was the protagonist. ⚔️ Some fun facts about Tristan: -He’s really good on the bodhran -He’s an ISFP, Enneagram 8w7 -He’s a blackthorn dryad, growing sloe berries in the fall and always sporting sharp thorns -He was incredibly difficult to write. He represents my anger, a side of me that’s typically unconscious. He kind of write himself, in a weird way. . #fairytale #characterdesign #characterart #artistsoninstagram #artismylife #trendingreels #speedpaint #arttimelapse #byronic #dryad #faerieart #bookstagram #yafantasy #characterconcept #edgelord
