🌵☀️ The record-breaking Phoenix heat has even been too much for some cactuses. Cactuses carry out essential functions at night. That’s when they open their stomata, or pores, and carry out a gas exchange in which they take in the carbon dioxide they use to photosynthesize during the day. But because nights in Phoenix have experienced record-high heat, Desert Botanical Garden Chief Science Officer Kimberlie McCue said this suffocates and stresses out the saguaros, which dehydrates them and makes them more susceptible to infections and insects. Am I the only person who lays awake at night, pondering the ecological wonders of desert plant adaptations? Seriously. I don’t live anywhere near a desert so I have to get my fix at the local botanical garden, where I’d happily just hang out with the cactuses and succulents for hours on end. That’s why I was absolutely ecstatic to spend time in the Sonoran Desert this spring, gushing over ocotillos and getting uncomfortably close to chollas. And I saw my first ever saguaro!!
