In simple terms, it is an equation built from a cubed term, a squared term, a regular variable term, and a constant term. Cubic equations are important because they can describe relationships that curve and change direction. Their graphs often have an S-like shape, and they may cross the horizontal axis once or several times. Each crossing represents a solution, also called a root or zero. The Rational Root Theorem is a method for finding possible rational solutions to a polynomial equation. A rational solution is a solution that can be written as a fraction of whole numbers. To use the Rational Root Theorem with a cubic equation, you look at two parts of the equation: the constant term and the leading coefficient. The constant term is the term without a variable, and the leading coefficient is the number attached to the highest-power term. The theorem says that any rational solution must come from a factor of the constant term divided by a factor of the leading coefficient. This gives you a list of possible rational roots to test. Once you make that list, you substitute each possible root into the equation. When one of them makes the equation true, you have found a root. That root tells you one factor of the cubic equation. After finding one root, you divide the cubic by its matching factor. This changes the cubic equation into a quadratic equation. A quadratic is easier to solve, usually by factoring or by using the quadratic formula. So the basic process is: identify the possible rational roots, test them, find one that works, divide the cubic by the matching factor, and then solve the remaining quadratic. The Rational Root Theorem does not guarantee that every cubic equation will be easy to solve. Some cubic equations have no rational roots. In those cases, the theorem is still useful because it helps rule out rational answers before using another method.
