Alone in a tower filled with the world’s largest display of sculptures by Alexander Calder. ✨ In this room filled with moving sculptures by Calder, giant mobiles are suspended in the sky. They turn and dance as you cohabit their space. One of the most extraordinary things about these deceptively gravity-defying objects is that they are supported by a force the size of your thumbnail: a tiny hook. In the mid-1930s, in addition to developing his classic mobiles, Calder began to explore the concept of creating three-dimensional paintings in motion. The movement of these sculptures results in a complex choreography of colors and forms that blur the line between circumstance and permanence. Held in the same family collection since 1947, ‘The Ghost’ (1945) is a lively and elegant early standing mobile by Alexander Calder.⠀ ⠀ Fashioned from sheet metal, a sinuous tripod form—painted bright red, with one leg in black—rears upwards.⠀ ⠀ The work embodies dramatically different forms when viewed from different angles, as its planar silhouettes, lines and spaces shift into ever-changing new relationships.⠀ ⠀ Calder typically titled his abstract works after their creation, and the name The Ghost may have been inspired by the red tripod’s nebulous, anthropomorphic form.⠀ ⠀ Alexander Calder, ‘The Ghost’ (1945), Estimate: £800,000-£1,200,000.⠀ ⠀ 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale: 28 February | London.⠀ ⠀ #Calder #AlexanderCalder

This February, the inaugural installation of Calder Gardens will shift for the first time. New sculptures will be installed, and others will be relocated. Black Widow features a composition of forms in groupings that evoke a multidimensional musical score; this mobile creates phrases in its movements. Calder installed this work at the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brazil in São Paulo when he visited the country in 1948, and the installation at Calder Gardens marks its first presentation to the public in the United States and only its second outside of South America. Black Widow heads off to an exhibition in a few weeks, when a different work will be hung in its place in the Tall Gallery. Stay tuned.

No buscan protagonismo: generan atmósfera.
