Fav Hidden Gem, NC 🫶 A gorgeous, functional piece of art awaits inside the William B. Umstead State Park! A fallen red oak tree—approximately 25 feet long and several feet high—has been transformed by artists Jerry Redi and Randy Boni of Smoky Mountain Art. The pair spent a week using chainsaws to cut and carve away a series of animals, tree branches and leaves into the downed tree that lays just off the Graylyn multi-use trail. Have you seen it? Fall in the Carolinas is such a DREAM 🍁🍎☕️🥮 Here are some of my favorite fall things to do in the mountains: - Go leaf peeping…. Obviously. Higher elevations change sooner than lower elevations. I aim to go places high on the parkway as well as the smokies earlier in the season (around the second week of October). Lower elevations like some of the mountain towns and places like upstate South Carolina won’t be peak until later in October and early November - Visit an Orchard or Winery… some great ones include @linvillefallswinery , @skytoporchard , @grandfather_vineyard and @markedtreevineyard - Rent a cabin to get the full Autumn experience. Some of my favorites include @littlemountainaframe @edenwoodnc @smoky_mountains_cabins (on TN side of the smokies) @flowertowncharmoffgrid - Do some camping!!!! The cooler temperatures are so nice for camping and you can have a nice campfire if there aren’t any fire bans in place 🙌🏼 I love using @hipcamp to find unique campsites. I have an entire blog post dedicated to my favorite campsites in NC 🏕️ - Brewery hop in downtown Asheville! There are so many good places to grab a beer like @burialbeer @wickedweedbrewing @whitelabsbrewingcoavl and @terranovabeerco after a long day on the trails. - Rent a kayak/SUP or bring your own to places like Fontana Lake, Lake Jocassee, or Lake Santeetlah Whatever you do, make sure to be bear aware! October is bear hunting season and bears are more active as they’re preparing for hibernation. Posted 10/15/2024* Update 10/15/24: Linville, Canton, Mars Hill, Flat Rock, West Jefferson, Marion, Morganton, Spindale, Rutherfordton, and Forest City are welcoming visitors. While there is widespread damage throughout our region, some areas have not been affected as much as others. Those towns have spoken out in the last week saying that they’re in need of visitors to help support their local businesses. *Just as a reminder the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed indefinitely in North Carolina. There are many other places to adventure, though. When you’re planning the trip, check with local visitors centers and tourism boards about things to do in the area.* Also be sure to check drivenc.gov for road closures and drive with caution. Expect heavy traffic and detours. Do not visit any impacted towns unless you have plans with a volunteer organization.
