A Day in the Life #Zambia : In Zambia, the eating of rodents is a long-standing cultural practice, particularly among rural communities. Wild mice, locally called mbeba, are considered a delicacy and an important seasonal source of protein. Communities such as the Tumbuka, Senga, Chewa, and Ngoni carefully distinguish between edible wild mice and the house rat, which is avoided as unclean and disease-bearing. For generations, families have passed down knowledge of more than a dozen edible species, each valued differently depending on size, fat content, and taste. The practice is not only about sustenance but also about tradition, memory, and identity, with some Zambians recalling the eating of mbeba as a reminder of rural roots and cultural continuity. Rodent consumption in Zambia also falls into the larger category of bushmeat. Alongside mice, other small mammals such as cane rats, porcupines, and even mole-rats are sometimes eaten, and bats are consumed in certain regions. In rural areas, bushmeat fills a nutritional gap where domestic livestock is scarce or unaffordable. In urban centres like Lusaka, demand for bushmeat persists through black-market channels, with some consumers perceiving it as more natural and healthier than farmed meat.
