We get asked in the comments quite a bit, what’s the difference between canicross and running with my dog? Canicross is a sport, meant for you and your dog to work together as a team. Specific gear is worn to allow for your dog to pull out front safely, kind of like a sled dog, but we’re on dry land and running. We have ran in a canicross style with a variety of dogs now at the shelter, from energetic puppies, to beagles saved from a hoarding situation, big beefy confident dogs with a lot of pull, to unsure dogs looking for a bit of validation. Whether for fun or for racing, canicross with your dog is the BEST! When something for fun becomes a hobby, then becomes a passion. 🫶 Photos throughout the years: 👉 Buying our first canicross harnesses at the end of 2022, my younger dog was 18 months old. 👊 Getting used to the harness and doing small local runs and walks for fun throughout 2023. 👉 Entering our first sprint distance 1km races for at the end of 2023, with a very surprisingly nice time of 3:45. 🤌 Entering our first @strongdog.de Wild & Dirty 5km fun race at the start of 2024. 💪 Getting more serious throughout 2024 in the sprint distance, I lost over 10kgs, and running at the dhv THS German National Championships (SVK)! Set a new PB of 3:30! 🫰 Throughout 2024 I saw an overall improvement with my relationship with my dog, a decrease in her reactivity, and overall a more positive result from everything we were doing. I believe this is largely due to giving her an appropriate outlet for her drive - canicross! 👏 Started training and competing in the short distance 2.5km at the end of 2024. 🥵 New PB on the Sprint distance of 3:17! ✨ Qualifying and attending the 2025 Eastern-Interstate Canicross Championships on a 2.4km track, scored a new PB time of 9:24! 🎉 It's now early 2025 and even after a few weeks resting an injury, we still managed to set a new PB on the 1km distance of 3:05. How I taught my dachshund to Canicross! When starting canicross with small breeds one of the most important steps is finding a properly fitting pulling harness. We have recently been trying out the @golechienblanc trac harness and I have been loving the quality and fit. When sizing is always our biggest struggle I love discovering brands that are accommodating to mini but mighty pups. Remember to always start slow and build your way up! Start at a level that feels comfortable and fun for both you and your dog. Then over time, gradually increase intensity, speed, and distance with each run! First time trying out canicross with Ilya🥰 We only did a few starts, letting her stand and wait for my „go“ to get the basics. But obviously she had so much fun! I love that she’s always up to anything we try🩵 All of our gear is from @nonstopdogwear ! 🧡 Ad/cooperation

My non negotiables when running with your dog: - Proper harness: any harness will do as long as it does NOT limit your dog’s shoulder mobility! - I started off with a regular leash and later got a bungee leash. Highly recommend to prevent sudden jolts - Handsfree belt is more or so optional but it is nice to run handsfree! - Both you and your dog need to warm up to prevent injury! - Be mindful of breed/age appropriate excersice - Be mindful of water intake as well to avoid bloat Happy Running! #dog #dogs #dogsofinstagram #canicross #running
