I remember the first time I cried in a therapy session. I felt a little strange and confused. There was complete silence. Thoughts in my head were racing: “Did we lose connection?” “Maybe she doesn’t hear me?” And then something unexpected happened. I realized I didn’t need to explain my crying. “How interesting,” I thought. And then another feeling came - I could cry and cry, and no one was trying to stop me. Yes, it may look strange at first Or even cold. But over time, with more sessions and explanations from my therapist, I learned why therapists stay quiet in those moments. Here’s why 👇 1. It’s a safe space to feel. In real life, we’re often rushed to “pull ourselves together,” “calm down,” “be normal again.” In therapy, you don’t have to hold yourself back. Silence gives you permission to stay with your emotion to live it, not suppress it. 2. Tears are not a breakdown. They are part of healing. Crying helps the nervous system release tension. When we interrupt this process, we may stop something important from happening. 3. Comforting too fast can invalidate the feeling. Phrases like “don’t cry” or “everything will be fine” can sound like: “Your pain is too much. Stop showing it.” Silence says the opposite: “What you feel matters. I see it. I’m here.” 4. The goal is not to silence the symptom, but to understand it. Tears are not the problem. They are a signal. By giving you time, the therapist helps you understand what’s really behind this wave of emotion. 5. You learn that you can survive strong feelings. This is a key skill. Over time, you realize: a strong emotion won’t destroy you. You can go through it. The therapist’s calm, steady presence teaches your nervous system exactly that. 6. This is not a lack of empathy. Maybe when you cried, you were told: “Stop crying.” “It’s not a big deal.” “You’re too sensitive.” “Be strong.” So you learned something very early. Crying doesn’t help. Crying makes things worse. Crying makes people uncomfortable. So you stopped. Now as an adult, it looks like this: • You feel heavy but tears don’t come • You laugh things off instead of feeling them • You say “I’m fine” automatically • You feel emotions in your chest or throat, but they stay stuck • You don’t know how to release what you’re holding This makes sense. If crying wasn’t welcomed back then, your body learned to shut it down. It was protection. As therapists, when someone says “I can only cry in a bathroom or when I’m alone somewhere hidden,” we don’t think that’s random or dramatic. We think your body only feels safe enough to fall apart when no one can see you. Bathrooms, cars, empty rooms, showers these become emotional hiding spots, not because you want to be alone, but because somewhere along the way you learned: Crying isn’t safe around people. Crying is embarrassing. Crying is too much. Handle it privately. So your nervous system waits until you’re behind a locked door before it lets anything out. It’s actually protective.
