Between 1965 and 1967, Canon released the follow-up to the 7, the 7S. Most important difference being the introduction of a CDS meter instead of the selenium meter used in the 7. With only around 16000 examples made (and even less of the later '7sz' model), its not that common but luckily still very capable and affordable.A beautiful ending to Canons rangefinder series for sure. This set came with the legendary Canon 50mm f1.8 (in M39 mount). Needed some TLC but happy to be adding this one to the line-up. This is the Canon 7, a screw-mount rangefinder camera introduced in 1961. It’s the final Leica M39 screw mount camera made by Canon, released two years after the Nikon F ushered in the era of SLR dominance. Canon had released their own Canonflex SLR, but bet that there would still be a market for rangefinder cameras. They were correct, eventually selling over 100,000 Canon 7 bodies. The Canon 7 is defined by several distinctive features, including manually-selectable projected frame lines from 35mm to 135mm and a metal shutter curtain. Compared with the cloth shutter curtains used in Leica screw Mount cameras, these metal curtains are far more durable. And while most Canon 7 shutters you’ll see today have heavily dented or wrinkled curtains, in our experience this does not affect functionality. Another quirk of the Canon 7 is that it has no accessory shoe, instead featuring the meter display for the selenium cell on the top plate. (L The later Canon 7s and 7sZ replaced the selenium meter with a CdS cell. In practice, the Canon 7’s finder is much larger and brighter than other screw mount cameras, making it easier to focus. And in hand, the Canon 7 has a durable heft that matches its Gundam-esque aesthetic.
