There's never a dull moment when birding. Each time I venture out to bird, I don’t know what I’ll find. And each time, I return amazed by the unexpected encounters and discoveries that I’ve witnessed. Bonaire’s birds never fail to offer me glimpses into their captivating lives. One recent encounter involving two Crested Caracaras (Caracara plancus) stands out as a particularly remarkable experience, introducing me to an entirely new behavior: It all began when my attention was drawn to a young Crested Caracara standing on the ground. Nearby, a domestic duck leisurely indulged in a refreshing dip in a small pond. Suddenly, the young caracara sprang into action, launching itself into flight and menacingly approaching the unsuspecting duck. However, the young caracara seemed to reconsider its course of action, leaving the duck unharmed and instead flying toward an adult Crested Caracara standing nearby. And that’s when it got REALLY interesting! The adult caracara, asserting its dominance, swiftly subdued the younger, subordinate bird by forcefully pinning it to the ground, exerting pressure with its talons. Throughout this ordeal, the younger caracara emitted a persistent and increasingly urgent begging call, sounding like "swee swee swee." This vocalization grew louder whenever the dominant adult pecked at the younger bird's vulnerable underside. In addition to restraining its counterpart, the dominant caracara displayed threat behaviors, including a cackling vocalization and a head-throwback display accompanied by a rattle vocalization—generally accepted as signs of agitation among Crested Caracaras, although the behaviors may be used in different circumstances as well. Within moments, the intense interaction came to an end.
