Yesterday would have marked their 27 year wedding anniversary. Knowing what we do now these photos are almost painful to look at. But back then, we craved every and any image of the two of them and especially their small chic low key wedding which completely changed how we did things. Carolyn’s dress in particular, a simple effortless seeming slip dress, designed by her friend Narciso Rodrigeuz was nothing short of revolutionary. When I married just two short months later, my dress with its large tulle skirt and my over the top flower filled wedding party at The Metropolitan Club in NYC suddenly felt absurd. We all wanted to dress like her and emulate her perfect minimalistic style and lack of ornamentation. Incredibly for me, I had hired the same wedding photographer, Denis Reggie, who took these photos to photograph my wedding. Imagine my surprise and delight! But truly her style defined ‘90s chic, it wasn’t what we today call “quiet luxury” it was clean and simple - sort of preppy girl luxury or quiet elegance- in the best possible way. Doris Singleton who played Carolyn Appleby stated about her character, “She was sort of Lucy’s nemesis because both had young sons they would brag about. There was a rivalry there, but she had to be nice, Lucy had to be nice to Caroline, because her husband owned the television station.” Doris reminisced that while filming this episode, the mother of the baby who played Little Stevie said that he was a little fussy, as he’d just gotten over a cold. The mother gave Singleton some suggestions on how to keep him calm if he acted up. When Doris relayed this to Lucy, Lucy promptly told her that if he acted up, she should place him on the floor, off to the side, out of camera range. Doris was to continue with the scene as though nothing was wrong. Thankfully, the baby acted perfectly the day of filming.
