Many of you may be familiar with this adorable little insect. This is a female Eastern Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa virginica). To some, this insect is always a pleasure to see flying around on the warm days of spring and summer. And to others, this insect is a nuisance and an unwanted pest. The females of this species are infamous in chewing holes through wooden structures, such as trees, fences, people’s homes, and many other wooden infrastructures. Female Eastern Carpenter Bees use their incredibly strong mandibles to chew circular holes through wood to excavate tunnels and chambers within them. Inside each of the chambers, a female will lay just one egg each on top of a ball of nectar and pollen that she has personally collected beforehand. After the tiny larva hatches out from its egg, it will feed on the pollen ball as its only food source before ultimately maturing into an adult. As adults, Eastern Carpenter Bees feed on plant pollen and nectar. Although adult females chew on wood when excavating tunnels, they do not consume the shavings. The males and females of this particular species can be easily distinguished by simply looking at their faces. The males have a predominantly yellowish-white face, while the female’s face is entirely black. There’s also a misconception that Eastern Carpenter Bees can’t sting. This is partly true. Male Eastern Carpenter Bees can’t sting, but female Eastern Carpenter Bees have the potential to deliver a venomous sting. Despite the females being able to sting, these particular bees are extremely docile. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! During my time outside looking for things, I often come in contact with Eastern Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa virginica) who are looking for a salty snack. The sweat that’s brought out of my body from the high temperatures attracts these kinds of bees, as well as many species of flies who want to have a share of my salt and other naturally occurring minerals. In the case of this of this female Eastern Carpenter Bee, she also wanted an up close and personal view of my face. *Hand drawn stickers added to my store’s website for purchase via link in bio! Did you guess the animal right? I thought this was a bumblebee, but I was wrong. Bumblebees have fuzzy abdomens. Large bees with smooth abdomens like this are an entirely different species - they’re carpenter bees. In this video we learn the differences between bumblebees and carpenter bees. #animals #science Specimen use made possible by the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.

We had two very different perspectives on our “carpenter bee situation” 😅 Me: let them live their best bee lives 🐝 My husband: not… in our house So we got curious and looked for a middle ground.🤪 Here’s what we learned: Carpenter bees aren’t aggressive (males don’t sting, and females rarely do), and they play an important role as pollinators 🌼 But… they do love untreated wood (like our cedar balcony) to lay their eggs. So rather than trying to get rid of them, we gave them a better option: Bee houses placed nearby in spots they already liked And it seems to be working! A small shift that supports pollinators and protects our home. This is one of those reminders that living in harmony with nature doesn’t always mean choosing sides (or getting a divorce 😂)… sometimes it just means getting a little curious, creative and communicating 💛 Live on happy bees! 🐝 🥹 What compassionate solutions have you found helpful for carpenter bees?
