The village of Castleton is home to a number of caves - with some having been used to mine the famous Blue John stone, which can be found in the area. You need to SAVE these down for your next visit to the Peak District! Another cave! This time, Blue John 📍 Blue John Cavern Cross St, Castleton, Hope Valley S33 8WH Save for future planning! Fun Facts: 💠 Blue John is a type of banded fluorite. The name comes from ‘bleu-jaune’ meaning 'blue-yellow' in French. A French man came to the caves, saw the beautiful mineral and decided to name it... 💠 Blue John is still mined today and made locally into jewellery. The semi-precious stone is rarer than gold but not more expensive. Blue John is mined using a chisel and hammer - no blasting - to preserve and protect the crystal. 💠 These caves are actually very high up at 800 feet above sea level. For comparison, the Shard is 309 feet above sea level. ✒️ Top tips: This is a 1 hour tour with free car parking. Do not attempt this cave if you are claustrophobic, have chest/lung/knee issues. It is well lit in areas with handrails on the steep inclines, however extremely slippery, so good footwear is essential. You will likely need warm clothing and waterproofs as it is a constant low temperature with water falling in some areas. 🍦 Sorry no food recommendations here. There is a snack bar but nothing else within walking distance from here. For some, it’s an interactive experience with the family, with added safety benefits. It’s a nice tourism pull that builds up the area and maintains less footfall that could potentially erode the caves further, not to mention people that leave rubbish! Amazing cave in The Peak District 🏞️ Thors cave is an absolute beauty! Hiking across from wetton mil is a nice route that give fantastic views of the cave from below… bare in mind the roads to wetton are single track lanes and parts of the route / cave are super slippy! A day in the Peak District 🏞️✨ Started off driving through the insane cliffs of Winnats Pass 🚗 — hands down one of the coolest roads in the UK! This place never disappoints (unless you time it wrong ofc 😉) The rocks to get in the cave can be very slippery, they’ve become polished over time with footfall but once inside the view down the Manifold Valley is beautiful! 🤩 Don’t forget your torch when visiting here as the back of the cave is very dark & a phone light doesn’t do it justice! 🔦 If you’ve not been yet, make sure you save this for later & add it to your must see Peak District list 📌 📍 Thor’s Cave, Wetton, Staffordshire 🚘 Parking - DE6 2AF or ST13 7TX (the first postcode is for Wetton Village car park & the second for Weag’s Bridge layby parking, both good options but both get busy during peak times so make sure you plan your visit) 🥾 Short walk - under 2 miles out & back route, but there are plenty of routes local if you want a bigger hike. . .
