At the end of my second UK trip in the last two months, after another epic run working on the story for Unspecified Game Company’s latest masterpiece in the making, the team feasted and toasted and called it quest complete (for now) and then I had a full day to myself to finally explore the richness of Cambridge. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had that travel experience, the feeling of roaming aimlessly through strange cities with no plan or agenda, ready to pounce on whatever catches my eye. I climbed up a dizzying bell-tower staircase while the bells rang out a surreal cacophony all around me. I ate incredible food and perused mystic baubles at a street market. And I thoroughly absorbed the glory of King’s College Chapel—by day for the light, by night for the music. I no longer have any religious inclinations, but I have always loved cathedrals. I’ve always felt that Protestantism missed something big when they abandoned Catholicism’s aesthetic of reverence and mystery for the aggressive plainness of suburban McChurches and undecorated warehouses. The idea I was raised with of God as an approachable dad figure, a good old boy I could have a beer with—that never held any appeal to me. If God must exist, it should be vast and strange like a psychedelic trip. That’s what cathedrals evoke to me, incomprehensible spaces filled with secret chambers and mysteries I’ll never understand until I’m invited through the tiny door and up the narrow staircase to see what’s behind the walls. #cambridge #kingscollege #cathedrals
