Dining in a cave sounds like it’s all about the ambience, but Cavern Restaurant proves otherwise. From the Hunter’s Platter to the carbonara and vongole, every dish was rich, comforting, and executed beautifully. The truffle fries were addictive, the buttery mashed potatoes smooth and indulgent, and even the Oreo latte impressed. Came for the cave setting, stayed for the food — genuinely superb and did not disappoint. Ever dined in a cave before? Well now you can at Singapore’s first ever cave restaurant. Called Cavern Restaurant, it’s located at the entrance of the newly opened Rainforest Wild Asia at the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, and is the latest concept by the Tung Lok Group. Open from lunch to dinner, the space imitates the Mulu Caves of Sarawak, one of the largest and most intricate cave systems in SEA and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It does sort of give you the feel of what cave dining would be, without the dampness, chill or musky odour that often comes dining in a real cave. Food wise, it’s a mish mash of international western flavours. I’d recommend going for the Hunter’s Board purely because it’s value for money. At $68, you get well marinated pork ribs, beef tenderloin steak in a skewer, half a chicken, chargrilled tiger prawns and some roasted veggies. Enough for 2 or even 3 depending on your appetite. The beef was done well with good flavour and not overcooked, nice and soft with a good bite. I also really enjoyed the chicken which was marinated in a peri peri sauce, it had good flavour going deep into the meat, pretty juicy and and a nice tinge of spicy heat although it could have done with a bit more roasting for that golden hue. Served with an interesting refreshing Chimichurri sauce. While food is decent, remember what you’re here for ultimately, is the vibe and the experience of dining in a cave-like setting without having to leave the country. And yes you can dine here without a park ticket. Cavern Restaurant is now open at Rainforest Wild Asia.
