Uma cápsula espacial que transportava cinzas de cremação e DNA apresentou falha ao reentrar na atmosfera terrestre, caindo no oceano Pacífico e perdendo toda a carga. Especializada em organizar funerais no espaço, a Celestis comercializa várias modalidades de memoriais, podendo incluir o lançamento de DNA e restos mortais no espaço profundo. A missão que apresentou problemas era do pacote “Earth Rise”. Impulsionada pelo foguete Falcon 9 da SpaceX, a missão levou à órbita da Terra um total de 70 cargas úteis, incluindo satélites e cápsulas. Uma delas era a Nyx, da empresa europeia The Exploration Company, que carregava restos mortais de 166 pessoas e animais de estimação enviados pela Celestis, especializada em funerais no espaço. A Celestis explicou que o paraquedas da Nyx, essencial para diminuir a velocidade durante a descida e amortecer o impacto, falhou durante a abertura. Dessa forma, a cápsula despencou em alta velocidade, mergulhando diretamente no Oceano Pacífico. Com o impacto, toda a carga que vinha do espaço acabou se dispersando no mar. “Embora atualmente acreditemos que não podemos devolver as cápsulas de voo, esperamos que as famílias encontrem um pouco de paz em saber que seus entes queridos fizeram parte de uma jornada histórica, lançados ao espaço, orbitaram a Terra e agora estão descansando na vastidão do Pacífico, semelhante a uma dispersão marítima tradicional e honrada”, lamentou a Celestis, como relata o Space.com.
