another fun favorite! in the original version of the Rococo Variations, this is only the fourth; the coda that usually follows is cannibalized from an 8th variation, which was cut by the premiering cellist for not being impressive enough... but I think that defeats the purpose of the piece, which is to be balletic and elegant! 🎼 P.I. 🎻🥀 Camille Saint-Saëns — Cello Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 119 Sol Gabetta — cello 🎻 Konzerthausorchester Berlin — Christoph Eschenbach • When Saint-Saëns finished copying the score, he wrote to his publisher Durand before sending it to print. He confessed in writing: the difficulty was too high to match the success of the first concerto. Thirty years earlier, in 1872, he had written the Cello Concerto No. 1, an instant success that entered the great cellists' repertoire and never left. This second attempt had been requested as a sequel. Saint-Saëns knew he was delivering the opposite. Hollmann premiered the work in Berlin, in February 1903. One reviewer wrote that never had so many notes been written with so little purpose. • The piece is built in two large movements, each split in two parts. This video opens the second, where the work reveals its rhythmic heart. Listen to the woodwinds: beneath the cello's unbroken running, they begin marking a repeated figure. It's a bolero rhythm, the same Spanish bolero Saint-Saëns met during his travels to Andalusia. This pulse is the secret skeleton of the whole piece. It appears transformed at the start of the first movement, vanishes, and returns now with raw force. • Sol Gabetta was born in Córdoba, Argentina, and built her career in Switzerland, where she founded her chamber music festival in Basel. The cello she plays here is a 1759 Guadagnini, older than the concerto being performed. Watch her attack at the start: the bow bites the string without hesitating, and the fast figuration begins at full speed.
