It isn’t working because you haven’t taught your students how to work independently yet 🤦‍♀️ This is such a common issue I hear from teachers: they want to include an independent center, but their students can’t work independently. My response is always this: they can’t work independently YET. We have to teach them! Think about it- every skill our students learn, we have to teach them. If we never give them the opportunity to learn, we can’t expect them to ever work independently. So, how do we get them there? Here are steps to teach your students how to work independently: 1. Start small. With any centers you’re introducing, start small. Think 5 minutes or less. Initially only work on the routine and expectation of what each center entails. Work your way up from here to 15-20 minute centers. 2. Use errorless tasks or even preferred activities at independent centers first. Before incorporating more challenging independent tasks, start with preferred tasks to get your students acclimated with the center and comfortable staying there. This will help with students that don’t stay in their space. 3. Only use tasks that are mastered skills. In order for students to work truly independently, the tasks they complete at the independent task box center need to be skills they have already mastered. 4. Have a para supervise the center to ensure students stay in their space and on task. Supervising the independent task box center can be their sole responsibility, or you can have them run an additional center if needed! I’m not saying it will be easy, or that it will happen overnight, but utilizing an independent center is possible in every single classroom. Depending on your students and class makeup, you may have to get creative and it may look unconventional, but you can do it! Trust me, you will be thanking yourself all year long!
