The boots still ended up cracking a tiny bit even after trying to fix them at the bone dry stage (where the boots attach to the chicken). I expected this could happen, but fortunately they are small cracks. I may be able to re-fire these with more white underglaze and clear glaze to fix the cracks. Full process of the hen wearing a scarf! I used two different glazes for this piece- clear on the body (the porcelain clay is this beautiful white color which looks nice under clear glaze), and satin matte clear on the scarf. I applied and wiped back the pink underglaze once the piece was bisque fired so the scarf textured would show more. Next time I’ll try using interactive pigments so the colors will pop more on the scarf. Carving the boot tread on these chickens was a bit of a challenge. The clay had dried a little too much, so I had to really press down with the carving tools and I was worried I would break the boots off! I made five chickens with boots in this batch and gave each a different boot tread design. I made each tread pattern match the sgraffito designs carved onto the bird! I didn’t like how the sgraffito flowers turned out, so I added some black underglaze to the centers. Carving sgraffito is very unforgiving because besides adding more underglaze, you can’t really fix your mistakes. Full process video of the mini hens wearing boots! I am happy with how these turned out but I need to do some test tiles (probably some even tinier chickens) before I fire the larger hens with boots. I think they need a cooler bisque fire for the glossiest shine. Stay tuned to see how the bigger batch turns out! Narrated version of this poor hen getting hit over the head with my phone. That’s the actual footage of it happening! I was sure my hours of work were going to be wasted, but somehow the clay was way stronger than I expected! My phone is pretty heavy but thankfully this thin comb stayed put, and only got a little squished. Now that this hen is complete, you can barely tell she had some head trauma! Do you prefer my videos with my narration, without narration, or do you like both kinds of reels? I personally prefer making them with music only, but it’s nice to explain what is going on in the video with narration. I love how the green scarf turned out! I used a satin matte glaze over the scarf and clear glaze over the rest of the piece. I’ve thought about getting buckets of dipping glaze for the convenience, but I like having more control over glazing (like using two different types). Should I make more chicken planters for my next shop drop? This was a commissioned piece for a friend - I usually don’t do commissions, but every time I have, the experience has been fun! I get to try new things based on customer requests, give myself somewhat of a deadline (but they have always been very generous in letting me take all the time I need), and I always make duplicates in case something goes wrong! Which hen is your favorite? I did a poll in my stories to see if people preferred the hen sculpture to have its mouth open or closed, and most said closed. I made one with the beak open too because a lot of you voted for that also! And there was an added benefit- the beak has an opening to the hollow sculpture which creates a vent hole. This will help the hen not to explode in the kiln if any water is still trapped inside when I fire it. For the closed beak hen, I made a tiny hole under the wing. Hopefully it closes up after glaze firing it! Full process of the “giraffe chicken”, whose poor neck was too long and had to be removed and remade. She’s no longer a giraffe, even though so many of you voted that I should have kept the neck super long!
