In one of the most delightfully chaotic moments in French film history, American comedy legend Jerry Lewis took the stage at the 5th César Awards in Paris on February 2, 1980, to present an Honorary César (César d’Honneur) to the incomparable Louis de Funès. What followed was less a formal ceremony and more a perfectly improvised comedy routine. The moment de Funès stepped forward, Lewis greeted him with an unexpected kiss on the mouth—an outrageous gesture that instantly broke the formality of the evening. De Funès later said the surprise immediately put him at ease, and from that point the two masters of physical comedy slipped naturally into a playful rhythm. Lewis, never one to let a straight line survive, jokingly called the trophy an “Oscar” instead of a César, then launched into a bit worthy of one of his films: a mock tug-of-war with the heavy statue. Each time de Funès tried to take the award, Lewis mischievously yanked it back, stretching the moment into a silent-film-style gag that had the Paris audience roaring. But beneath the clowning was genuine admiration. Lewis told the audience it was a “pleasure and privilege” to honor de Funès, whose explosive energy and elastic expressions had made him one of France’s most beloved comic actors since the 1950s. Ironically, this Honorary César would be the only César Award of de Funès’ career. Just three years later, in 1983, he passed away—leaving behind the tantalizing “what if” of a collaboration between two of the greatest physical comedians the world ever produced.
