You might be wondering why the Cesca Chair from Knoll looks so familiar, and there are a few reasons! Firstly, it’s a certified design icon from the Bauhaus era. The cantilever base was the first of its kind, and as such it’s widely considered amongst the most important chairs of the 20th century. The Cesca chair by Marcel Breuer, originally named the B32 (armless), and conceived of in 1928. Inspired by the bicycle he would ride to the Bauhaus, Breuer explored tubular steel furniture construction to help transform 20th century furniture design. Notably, the Cesca was wildly successful and because internationally recognizable for decades to come. This example dates to the late 1960s, during the time after Gavina in Italy acquired the rights to produce it and just after Knoll acquired Gavina. The construction is from cane, chromed tubular steel, and wood that appears to be dark stained beech. Our friends @ivars___ and @lukasmodern @milkivintage raised a few interesting points about this group of chairs. While we were first very trusting of the Gavina attribution due to these coming from the same original owner as the 4x rusty labelled Gavina/Knoll-labelled Wassily chairs we highlighted earlier (and the provenance stating that they were purchased at the same time from the same place), it’s been noted that the chairs have modified diameters at the bends (lesser sign of quality), caps at the ends of the tubes, and a somewhat suspicious pressed cane detail, which is not hand woven. The underside also shows construction from multiple tubes, which is not consistent with other Gavina examples. After some research, we did find that both Knoll and Gavina-marked examples did occasionally have pressed cane, which appears to be how Knoll examples are made today. This one does appear, however, to most be made by a different manufacturer with lesser quality and attention to detail. The tube on Knoll / Gavina examples would have used a mandrel tube bender, which avoids pinching the tube and makes more a more continuous appearance.
