Ever had a client say “my knee doesn’t like this”… mid-lunge? And suddenly you’re questioning the exercise, the class plan or your own cueing? Here’s the part most instructors miss: 👉🏼 knee pain in squats and lunges is rarely about the exercise itself. It’s usually about load, alignment, and where the effort is going. Two small adjustments can change everything: 1. Knee stacked over ankle This isn’t just a “nice cue”, it keeps force travelling through the joint the way it’s designed to, instead of dumping stress into the knee. 2. Weight into the heels Shift the work back into the glutes and hamstrings, and suddenly the knee isn’t doing a job it was never meant to do. Same movement but a very different experience for the client.Its not about more cues, it’s understanding why those cues work. When you know the anatomy behind your modifications, you stop guessing, stop over-correcting, and stop derailing your class every time someone flags pain!!! Can you spot what is happening in this side-lying series ❌ HINT When your top leg drops below hip level during a side-lying series, the gluteus medius (the side of your hip) stops doing the work. Instead, gravity takes over, and your body often compensates by using the lower back or front of the hip. Here is how to correct your alignment and maintain tension: 1. Set a “Lower Limit” Think of your hip level as the “floor” for your movement. The Goal: Keep the top leg parallel to the mat or higher. The Correction: If the leg drops lower than your hip, you lose the constant tension needed for the movement. 2. Check Your Waist (The “Mouse House”) Reach your top hip away from your ribs toward your feet. There should be a tiny gap between your bottom waist and the mat. If this gap collapses, your leg will naturally drop below hip level as your pelvis tilts. 3. Lead with the Heel Slightly rotate your toes toward the floor and push through your heel. This alignment keeps the work in the glute rather than shifting it to the hip flexors in the front of your leg. #clinicalpilates #physio

You can out lift poor mechanics… until you can’t. Most people don’t realize they’re compensating until one day their back, hip, or knee finally gives out. Sometimes the smallest tweak in alignment and control can make the biggest difference. This is why I’m such a fan of Pilates as a supplement to lifting.
