Over ten years, Austin ISD lost 10,000 students. To figure out where did all these kids go, we had to follow all the red string that led to AISD's declining enrollment. In part 1, we explored how the pandemic, affordability, and low birthrates are impacting Austin ISD and other school districts in Central Texas. That led us to school choice. In part 2, we looked at school choice. As more options open up to students and families, we see that other schools are creating a more competitive environment for public schools. In the final part of the AISD mystery, we ask -- what does this mean for education? Traditional public and charter schools both use public funds to educate kids, and the introduction of private school vouchers brings a third system into play. But, in either case, experts say state funds are limited, and are now being used to support multiple school systems. "At the end of the day, we have a limited pool of money for education. It's never enough. It's definitely not enough in Texas because the legislature hasn't adequately funded our schools," Davide DeMatthews, an expert on education, says. "On top of that, now we're going to have another system, with vouchers that's publicly funded that can take more students out. So now we'll have three publicly funded systems, all playing by different rules, making it really hard for school districts to plan and make decisions.”
