It leans and bounces, and soaks up bumps like nothing else. The Beetle, built by Volkswagen, is firmer and more controlled, using torsion bars. It feels more stable on pavement, though early swing-axle cars can get tricky when pushed. Compared to the 2CV, the Beetle feels tighter and more planted, especially at speed. But that swing axle setup can get a little sketchy when pushed—tuck-under oversteer is real if you’re driving it hard into corners. Step 1: Donor Procurement – Acquired a new S 63 E Performance (802 hp stock, 1,050 lb-ft, 4MATIC+ AWD, Executive Rear Package). Matched with a short-wheelbase 1971 600 shell from Texas, leveraging near-identical 126-inch wheelbase for seamless integration. Step 2: Disassembly and Structural Prep – Sandblasted the 1971 body to expose and repair corrosion; substituted hydraulic systems with electric window mechanisms for mass reduction. Deconstructed the S 63 to isolate chassis, powertrain (including AMG Ride Control+ suspension and rear-axle steering), and interior components. Step 3: Platform Fusion and Modifications – Affixed the 1971 shell to the S 63 chassis, extending rear glazing by 2 inches for suspension compatibility.
