Chirag Dilli village, South Delhi. Once a thriving village, Chirag Dilli is now a congested urban village struggling with encroachments and deteriorating infrastructure. Despite its ‘Heritage Village’ status, much of its historic charm is lost. Named after Sufi saint Nasiruddin Mahmud Chirag Dehlavi, the village still revolves around his mausoleum, believed to have healing powers. Before Partition, Hindus and Muslims coexisted harmoniously here. Vanishing Heritage and Open Spaces: The dargah, now crumbling, has seen little restoration. Chirag Dilli once had 13 wells and a large johad (water reservoir), now covered or encroached upon. Unchecked construction has led to vertical expansion, eliminating open spaces and worsening parking issues. Education and Historical Significance: Chirag Dilli was home to the first District Board Anglo Vernacular (DBAV) middle school, serving students from 22 nearby villages. Until 1957, it was the region’s main educational hub before students moved to Mehrauli for higher studies. The Legend of Roshan Chirag-e-Dilli: Sultan Feroze Shah Tughlaq (1351–1388) conferred the title Roshan Chirag-e-Dilli on Nasiruddin Mahmud after witnessing a miracle—water from a baoli (stepwell) burning like oil, enabling laborers to work despite an oil supply ban. According to INTACH, Chirag Dilli had four grand gateways: Dilli Darwaza (North) – The main entrance. Kasai Darwaza (South) – Named for the butchers who once lived there. Takht Darwaza (East) – A double-storeyed structure. Western Gateway – Lost to urbanization. The Need for Restoration: A Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) report calls for urgent infrastructural and cultural revitalization. Today, only 20% of original residents remain, with the population exceeding one lakh. Without intervention, Chirag Dilli risks losing not just its architectural heritage but also its legacy as a historic and cultural landmark. Chirag Dilli (चिराग दिल्ली) is a large and old village in south Delhi. Chirag Dilli old entrance gate Location It is located in south Delhi, in the vicinity of Mehrauli, Hauz Khas and Lado Sarai villages.
