It’s something you never think will happen to you — especially when kids get older. The other night Xander (8) had a choking incident that was really, really scary. Thankfully Aubrie and Leo were nearby and they both acted fast to not only alert the adults in the house but Aubrie was actually able to dislodge the food with back blows! I came running from upstairs but he was already okay by the time I got to him! Due to their past traumas, the kids get extremely shaken up with any kind of emergency, I’m sure Xander’s distress and the screams were all very triggering to them. Watching the incident back and hearing the terror in their voices breaks my heart 💔 This was a good reminder for us, and hopefully will serve as one for you too. It’s so important to discuss with your kids what to do when someone is choking! I just ordered one of those suction dechoker devices they sell that can help in these situations. I don’t know why I never had one before! It’s like I said, you never think it will happen to you!

The video, filmed in Guildford, Surrey, UK on April 22, shows little Layla getting very upset in the back of her mum's car because she is scared of the hair. Her mum later wrote online: "I was just about to start the engine and go out with my three children when Layla started screaming. "I turned around thinking something awful had happened and then fairly quickly realised she had a hair in her arm." "She had a similar meltdown a few days before when there was a small spider on her window on the outside," she continued. That one second when your child gags… and your heart stops. Choking is honestly my worst nightmare as a mom. Before you even realize what’s happening, things can go completely wrong. I know some people say “she’s older now, choking risk is less” or think I might be over-cautious… but for me prevention is always better than cure. So I stay careful — always watching, cutting food properly, and staying aware. No matter how careful we are, kids are still learning to eat, chew, and explore food. Sometimes gagging can be part of that learning process — but that doesn’t make it any less scary to watch as a parent. The important part in moments like this is staying calm. Because if I panic, she will panic too. Over time I’ve learned how to respond if a child chokes, and I also keep a choking rescue device at home — just for peace of mind.
