On this day in history, during the May 8, 2000, episode of Monday Night RAW, a dramatic Intercontinental Title match took place between champion Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. The odds were stacked against Jericho as Triple H appointed himself the special outside referee. The match was a technical battle, seeing Jericho lock in the "Walls of Jericho" and clearly forcing Benoit to tap out; however, Triple H intentionally ignored the submission while conversing with Stephanie McMahon. After a frustrated Jericho attacked Triple H, Benoit capitalized by trapping Jericho in the Crossface. Triple H immediately called for the bell, awarding the match and the Intercontinental Championship to Benoit, despite a controversial finish where it appeared Jericho had not officially submitted. This win allowed Benoit to regain the title just four days after losing it.
