Fan-favorite GREAT WHITE, a 3-year-old son of Volatile, has arrived at Churchill Downs in hopes of making it into the field for this year’s running of the Grade I Kentucky Derby 🌹 Currently, the colt - who towers above most others on the track at 17.2 hands - is first on the AE list for the Derby, meaning if one horse currently in the field is scratched, he’ll be in. Winner of the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes earlier this year, the John Ennis-trained Great White finished fifth in the April 4 GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes last time out. The 3-year-old gelding is also entered in the GII Pat Day Mile Stakes on the May 2 Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. If he doesn’t get into the Derby, he will run in the Pat Day. We may have witnessed the country’s top 3-year-old at Churchill Downs on Saturday…and he didn’t even run in the Kentucky Derby 👀 CRUDE VELOCITY, a colt from the first crop of Beau Liam who earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ honors after overcoming a nightmare trip to graduate by a neck on debut back in March, proved the star of the show in Saturday’s GII Pat Day Mile Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. He outslugged fellow ‘TDN Rising Star’ Englishman, winning by 3 3/4 lengths while setting a stakes-record time of 1:33.87. Crude Velocity earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure for the Pat Day performance. Trained by Bob Baffert, Crude Velocity is a perfect 3-for-3, remaining undefeated, with $522,820 in career earnings. “I told Bob he was the best 3-year-old in his barn. I wish we had more time to develop and I think he would have been in the Derby,” said jockey Florent Geroux. “This horse is a freaky horse,” said Baffert after the race. Baffert said it’s only 50-50 that Crude Velocity runs in the May 16 GI Preakness Stakes coming off of Saturday’s very fast race. He is already the 4-1 favorite in the 2026 Preakness future wager. On May 2, 2026, Golden Tempo won the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in a stunning come-from-behind victory, surging from the back of the pack to edge out co-favorite Renegade by a nose in a final time of 2:02.27. Golden Tempo entered the race as a 23-to-1 longshot. The jockey was Jose Ortiz, a Puerto Rican rider who claimed his first Kentucky Derby victory in 11 attempts. His brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., finished second on Renegade. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby in its 152-year history.
