Circular reasoning is often used in the germ theory. Genetic sequences are computer generated, then confirmed by a test developed based on the computer generated sequence. Same goes for the isolation of microbes or viruses. Sometimes in within a paper, sometimes it’s across the literature. Sola Scriptura is the only system that truly makes sense within Christianity. Critics say it’s circular: “If you can’t infallibly define what Scripture is, then you can’t use Scripture to defend Sola Scriptura.” But this doesn’t solve the problem... it just shifts it. Instead of trusting God’s Word, they trust an institution. They say, “I know what Scripture is because the Church tells me.” But ask what they mean by “The Church,” and you’ll find it’s defined by itself. “The Church” tells you what “The Church” is and why it alone has the authority to rightly interpret all things. That’s not clarity. That’s circularity. It’s like opening a dictionary, looking up “The Church,” and seeing: “See also: The Church.” You flip back and forth and never get an answer... just the conclusion. “The Church is authoritative because the Church says it is, and we are that Church because we say so.” 🔁 Sola Scriptura is different. It’s not based on a self-authenticating man-made institution. Scripture is a unified testimony of 66 books, 40 authors, over 1,500 years, all inspired by God (2 Peter 1:21). Jesus says the Father bears witness to Him (John 5:37), He bears witness to Himself (John 8:18), and the Spirit also bears witness (John 15:26). That is divine testimony—three witnesses, not one institution. (Deuteronomy 19:15) The Church is not the source of this witness—it is the result of it, “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
