Thumb sucking - How Does a Tongue Thrust Appliance Break the Habit? The appliance consists of a metal grate that prevents the tongue from pushing forward against the front teeth or protruding between them. It trains the tongue to stay back from the front teeth and breaks thumb or finger sucking habits. Because it is literally impossible for the child to continue the habit with the appliance in place, it is overwhelmingly successful. How Long Does it Need to Be Worn? The appliance may need to be worn anywhere from several months to a year. The length of treatment time depends on how long it takes to break the habit and how many hours a day a removable appliance is worn. This appliance is a fix appliance. Underbite treatment? No problem for a specialist orthodontist. This patient had a severe “underbite” (anterior crossbite: where the upper front teeth bite under the lower front teeth) Her treatment involved 2 parts: 1. Expander and reverse pull headgear treatment. This expands the narrow upper jaw and the headgear pulls the upper jaw forwards to achieve the nice profile change you see. 2. Braces. Due to severe teeth crowding and misalignment, some teeth needed to be removed so the teeth can be straightened safely and be healthy for the long term.
