In this video, @murunbat_ mentions one of the reasons why Mongolians use the Cyrillic script. Mongolians began using Cyrillic mainly due to political and educational reforms during the socialist period in the 20th century. Main reasons: 1. Influence of the Soviet Union After the Mongolian Revolution of 1921, Mongolia became closely aligned with the Soviet Union. In the 1940s, the Soviet government encouraged Mongolia to adopt the Cyrillic alphabet, similar to the Russian writing system. 2. Literacy and education reforms The Traditional Mongolian script was considered difficult for mass literacy at that time. The Cyrillic alphabet was easier to teach and helped increase literacy across the country. 3. Official adoption In 1946, the Mongolian People’s Republic officially replaced the traditional script with the Cyrillic alphabet for schools, government, and publications. Today - Mongolia widely uses Cyrillic in everyday life, education, and media. - The traditional Mongolian script is being revived and taught in schools. - The government plans to gradually increase the use of the traditional script alongside Cyrillic. #Mongolia #mongolian #mongolianlanguage #mongolie #mongoliatravel

Our biggest flex 🇲🇳 Buryat-Mongolians historically used the traditional vertical Mongolian script until the early 1930s. Mongolian script is a flexible system, allowing speakers of various dialects (Khalkha, Buryad, Oirad, Inner Mongolian, etc.) to read the same text regardless of pronunciation differences. Documents used: materials of the State Archives of Buryatia, archive of the Buryad Unen newspaper, example of Vagindra script. #buryatia#mongolia#mongolian#буряадхэлэн#монголбичиг

This video took me a while to finish — the story gave me goosebumps🫢 Tamir’s grandmother spent her days as a Soviet censor, but at night she secretly taught her grandson the old Mongolian script. Today, Tamir @tamir.art is one of Mongolia’s most respected calligraphers, founder of @calligraphy_center_mongolia — located in Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. He’s also a teacher to hundreds of students from Mongolia and abroad. 🐎When I visited, invited by his wife Agata, Tamir didn’t even know who I was. But later, completely unplanned, he surprised me with a gift — a custom calligraphy piece that reads: “roots. Where it all begins. I bow to Tengri and to our ancestors. Whisper prayers to those who came before me” 🫢It even came with an authentication certificate, but for me, its value is something else entirely. This is the most meaningful piece I own, and it will stay with me forever. 📚Behind these beautiful letters lies an entire world — literature, medicine, legends, and wisdom locked away since Soviet times. When Mongolia switched to Cyrillic, the natural flow of the language was broken. The old script reveals its true rhythm and roots — it’s the key to our ancestors’ knowledge. 😶‍🌫️The fastest way to erase a nation is to erase its language. Yet here, it still lives. 🥲I only learned a year ago that we Buryat-Mongols once used this script too. Yes, the Soviets brought some good things — but the strength it took for this nation to protect their writing, and still use it in government, is something I deeply admire. 🇲🇳There’s a Mongolian proverb: “The best education is to learn how to be a human.” Calligraphy teaches that. And Tamir’s grandmother’s story reminded me — preserving your language is preserving your soul. Thank you @tamir.art @calligraphy_center_mongolia I’m omw to find a Mongolian language tutor 🫢😂 #mongolia#mongolian#calligraphy #mongolianscript #kharakhorum #mongolianart #mongolianartist #mongoliancalligraphy #buryad

223,421

Mongolian steppe culture is one of the most unrecognized and misunderstood cultures in the world. It is often spoken about only through conquest, while its poetry, oral traditions, philosophy, and deep systems of knowledge are ignored. For centuries, Mongolians educated through storytelling, memory, music, and lived practice, building a rich cultural world without needing the structures that the West later defined as “civilization.” Yet even today, in the 21st century, steppe people from Central Asia are still labeled as barbaric or uncultured, while Greek and Western European cultures are treated as naturally superior—a mindset I still hear in college classrooms. This is not only false, but unfair. Mongolian culture, alongside other steppe civilizations like the Scythians and Turkic peoples, developed advanced traditions in art, weaving, metallurgy, governance, and diplomacy that influenced vast parts of the world. To remember Mongolians only for conquest is to erase the depth, creativity, and dignity of a culture that has shaped history far more than most are willing to admit. #MongolianCulture #SteppeCulture #NomadicHeritage #CentralAsia #UnrecognizedHistory #HiddenHistory #DecolonizeHistory #BeyondConquest #CulturalPride #CulturalIdentity #OralTradition #AncientWisdom #BreakStereotypes #ChallengeTheNarrative #RepresentationMatters #HistoryMatters #WorldHistory #IndigenousKnowledge #MoreThanConquerors
