Making a simple straight walled stoneware mug, from the clay preparation, throwing, trimming and finally the tricky process of attaching and pulling the handles from the body. For that stage, which you’ll see towards the end of this video, the mugs have to be just the right side of leather hard. If they’re soft leather hard, attaching and pulling the handles will likely distort the cups round shape, so instead I wait until they’re on the firm side of leather hard to attach them. I test this by carefully squeezing the pots rim. If it easily changes shape and becomes slightly oval, then they’re still too soft to handle. Whereas if I squeeze the rim gently and it holds the round shape, then they’re ready to go but, I have to act relatively quickly or keep mugs that are ready beneath sheets of plastic to halt the drying process. If the rims begin to turn bone dry and the walls are slowly doing so too, then they’re too dry for this particular way of making handles. It’s tricky, yet in the cooler months it’s easier to manage this process as everything dries out more slowly. Compared to the height of summer, where pots left out will turn bone dry in moments and the studio ends up looking like a crime scene with blankets of plastic lining every surface, covering pots and making impromptu damp cupboards. #satisfying #handmade #howitsmade #pottery #asmr
