Clan Chief MacIain was shot as he rose from his bed. Women and children were chased out into a midwinter blizzard, where the cold finished what the blades started. ​This wasn't just murder. The Massacre of Glencoe (1692) ​The story of Glencoe isn't just about a battle; it’s about the breaking of "Slaughter Under Trust." In Highland culture, the laws of hospitality were sacred—if you took someone into your home, you were bound to protect them. ​In early 1692, Captain Robert Campbell and 120 soldiers arrived at Glencoe, claiming they needed shelter because the local forts were full. The MacDonald clan, following ancient tradition, gave them food, drink, and beds for two weeks. Little did they know, Campbell had orders in his pocket to "fall upon the rebels, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, and put all to the sword under seventy." ​At 5:00 AM during a blizzard, the soldiers turned on their hosts. They murdered 38 men, women, and children in their own homes, while another 40 perished from exposure in the mountains trying to escape.
