Clicker training is easy, effective, and enjoyable! You CLICK the behavior you want to see more of and then always follow it up with a tiny treat. Clicker training can help increase your dog’s focus, build engagement, train new behaviors, work on their reactivity, teach alternative behaviors for stuff you want to change, help them pay attention around distractions, and more. The applications are endless! I use primarily clicker training with Matilda both on her tricks & behaviors at home and her reactivity to dogs and strangers. It has already helped her so much! It helps her learn stuff so quickly and really brings out her full potential. Yes, I absolutely clicked and treated this behavior 😂 It’s one of the things Fenway does that I find hilarious, and it’s definitely been reinforced over time by my reactions to it. So now he brings it out whenever the opportunity presents itself — and I LOVE IT. It makes me laugh, smile, and remember how not-serious this all is. I know he knows the skill I’m asking for in this video, so I’m not worried about messing up the cue by reinforcing something else once. I think it’s fun, and I like having fun with my dog and encouraging creativity in training. If I really needed him to focus, I know how to set up a session to get that focus. This was not that! All our dogs have been clicker trained to come in an emergency. They could be running toward the street or just not coming when called. BUT… when they hear the click sound they come running. In the beginning we give high value treats…the good stuff. We ALWAYS pay for the clicker. Don’t push the button without treat in hand. Would ruin the run to me now response. The later video clips in this reel show even baby Emma got that the clicker means come food now! Fifi has been working hard on her colours! She is now pretty confident telling the difference between the blue and yellow cue cards, but I am still not making it too difficult for her as she does sometimes make mistakes (which obviously I’d like to avoid). She’s just starting to understand that the position of the highlighters doesn’t matter, and to really look at the cue card before choosing. It’s not a Clever Hans style trick, where I’m giving a subtle cue with my hands or anything like that — she is actually recognising the colour on the card. Here’s one minute of her choosing the correct colour every single time. How To Reduce Reactivity Quick, simple, fast. Step 1. Charge the clicker or Marker Word. Step 2: click at the sight of a trigger before the dog reacts. Treat delivery is important to hold focus and create space. Step 3: once step 2 is fluid, we want to start Clicking when the dog looks at us not the trigger. A behavior can look good in the moment. The dog responds, everything seems clear, and it feels like progress. But what happens immediately after that tells you much more. After reinforcement: does your dog return and re-engage? Or do they disconnect, look around, and come back only when prompted again? That small moment is often the difference between something that is being built and something that just happened. Because training is not only about the response. It’s about how repetitions connect. When that connection is clear and consistent, progress becomes stable.
