The close grip pull down DOESN’T suck, here’s why The lat functions best when the arm moves close to the body. So therefore, the close grip is actually one of the better lat movements to do. So why does it suck? Biceps. Biceps are why it sucks. With the positioning of the cable, mechanically you are forced to over flex the elbow which is driven by the biceps. Not only that, typically if you sit right underneath the origin of the cable, range doesn’t seem to feel as full because your close hands can’t pull passed your clavicles like you can in other pull down variations.
