Because it’s better 👍🏽💯💪🏽 However, there are methods earlier on in the process where two hand collaring is impressively effective—I have seen many great potters use two-hand collaring to start their pulling shape. But for making bottle necks, bringing in rims… i find this way much better. I think we can all agree that seeing an animal healthy and alive in the wild is far better than seeing it sedated. However, the reason we do this is to ensure that more animals remain healthy and alive in the wild for generations to come. In conservation, collars are used on cheetahs to monitor their movements, behavior, and overall health. This helps conservationists track their range, identify threats, and intervene when necessary, all critical to ensuring their survival in the wild. I recommend soldate clay for collaring practice. I had such an incredible throwing day! Although I was drawn to throwing because it helped me to be more mindful and present, I’ve discovered that if there is something eating at me, I will not have a fruitful throwing day. On those days (or weeks 🙄) I just practice and don’t put any pressure on myself to produce. It will happen when all the stars are aligned in my favor and my heart, mind, and soul are at peace. I think I’m going to turn these into teapots! I had a good, slow speed with both my wheel and hands as I was collaring in but my hands weren’t at the same level when I started collaring in. ✨Bottles for days✨ I've been on a bottle kick this week-- throwing collared vases and bottles of all shapes and sizes. Forms with a narrow neck are often a challenge when you're first developing your throwing skills. I like to think about approaching bottles like building a house: start with a good foundation, and build up from there. Take the time to get all of your height, and the curve you want in the bottom half of your form, before you start shaping the neck of the bottle. Alternating a collaring gesture with a pull using my fingertips helps even out the redistributed clay and prevent wobbles or buckling as I narrow the neck. And if ever a wobble develops in the rim, cut it off before it begins to translate down into the body of the form! I use a metal rib to achieve a smooth, strong curve in my form, and to remove any theowing lines or slip from the outside. Who else needs to remind themselves to take deep breaths, often, and with purpose. The world is weird and I just want to make pretty pots. Here, I’m working on a taller cylindrical form. Before I get in there to pull the walls up, I collar in the rim of the pot — first, with what I call the old hippie hug, next with a 6-point collaring technique — to help prevent the opening from getting too wide, as it wants to do. Finally, the first big pull, trying to bring as much clay from the base up into the walls of the pot. My outside hand is a bit lower than my inside hand, so I can push the thick clay wall out with one hand, and lift that donut ring of clay with the other.
