Chroma vs. Saturation. 🎨 They both refer to how intense/colorful a color is. We can lower the chroma of a color with black, white, or grey. But lowering saturation basically means mixing with white. So grey will lower saturation as well because it contains white, but black will only lower brightness, not saturation. (At least, theoretically and digitally. When actually mixing paints, black does lower saturation because it reflects some light.) Oil painters sometimes use the terms interchangably. But when working with digital images or digital paintings, it’s important to know that when you lower Saturation, the color will also get lighter. For centuries, many old masterpieces have been hidden beneath layers of yellowed varnish, applied long ago to protect the paint but which darkened over time. A 1617 portrait recently underwent a careful restoration where experts slowly dissolved and lifted away this thick coating, revealing colors and details that had been muted for hundreds of years. The process is painstaking, requiring delicate tools and chemicals to avoid damaging the original paint. But once completed, the transformation is remarkable—the portrait regains its vibrancy, with bright tones and fine brushwork visible again, allowing us to see the artwork much closer to how it looked over four centuries ago.
