Colourism is not a flex. Never. It is ignorance or plain bullying! And bullying is evil. Stop telling or showing kids their lighter-skinned siblings or friends look better. It's disgusting. Colourism is the prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone. Model Sheerah Ravindren spoke to us about her experience of colourism as a dark-skinned Tamil woman. Not seeing any representation of people that looked like her throughout her life, Sheerah found inspiration from Black women who embraced their dark skin, which led to her being able to unlearn colonial ideologies around beauty. I mean if Superstar @rajinikanth couldn’t escape it, what chance did we have, really? What’s more haunting than the lyric itself was my mom’s empathy when translating it for me as a kid. Being the darkest person in our family, I saw her flinch every time Tamil media brought up skin tone… and it brought it up a lot. ⁠ ⁠ Kollywood, fairness creams like Fair & Lovely, and the long shadow of colonialism all worked overtime to teach us that lighter was better… and I believed it. I spent childhood beach trips hiding in the shade and slathering on sunscreen, (mistakenly) in the hope it would stop me from getting darker. ⁠ ⁠ But no more. I’ve unlearned that shame, shed that burden, and now? I rejoice when the sun kisses my skin. I shut down ANYONE who brings up a whiff of that rhetoric in front of my children. Why is colourism being normalized and in some cases even celebrated by certain voices within the Foundational Black American (FBA) community? I understand the importance of defining and honoring a unique cultural identity. That matters. But why does that sometimes come at the expense of excluding or diminishing other Black people—especially those with darker skin tones? There seems to be a growing narrative that traits like a “copper undertone” are exclusive, while Africans are stereotyped as uniformly dark-skinned. Not only is that inaccurate, it reinforces the same colourist ideas that have historically divided Black communities worldwide.
