The Art Fair was so inspiring. It felt like I was breathing in art. From the masters to well-known artists and exciting new talents from around the world, every corner had something special. Highlights for me were seeing Goya’s work in person, meeting the legendary Kidlat Tahimik and chatting with him for a bit, and seeing my friend Demet’s works on display. Such a good day for the soul.

𝘽𝙊𝙎𝙎𝘽𝘼𝙇𝙄𝙏𝘼? For all the ways the word ‘grit’ may be spammed to describe Soytey’s resume or his role in art collective THE HARD WAY, it is ‘balance’ that those close-reading can look to when authenticating the work, signed six letters with tail and curlicue. Thanos-balanced. “Kung di mo ba alam na pangalan ko si Soytey, magugustuhan mo ba yung art?” Dogs and faces and skulls and palm trees. Horses memorized from a Sta. Ana childhood, rendered dripping in his Pasay studio– Soytey Kadena chooses subjects that are easy to digest, whose forms are almost instantaneously visually understood, that the distortions that inevitably come up because of his heavy-handed no-look manner of marking lines are made imperceptible. Almost normal, camouflage-weird. Like those pretty/ugly faces you never forget. There is a blacked out canvas with airbrush-white renders of a yin-yang symbol, the bat signal, a cross, and the face of Christ that Soytey wanted to erase, ”anlaki kasi ng ilong,” he says, nitpicking at the equilibrium as usual. He rendered it in black and white, “para maangas,” then to balance, blacked out another canvas and painted a hello kitty facsimile in glitter-acrylic. For his daughters, he says. Always just working with what’s on hand, some works in the exhibition are painted on large rolls of paper– one was a blue face “na parang iba yung bigay,” until a flame pattern balaclava painted over gave the awkward snarl of the Colossal Titan, and all was balanced; another features the usual assortment of Soytey icons with a central dog on a chain (black and white at first, but with permission his daughters colored it in and doodled their own versions of their father’s distorted images, an afternoon of committed lineage in ink to paper) – he chose Kadena as an artist name “kasi maangas,” but also because of how it isn’t something that holds together alone. “Hindi mabubuo ng isa lang e.” Notes by Owel Alvero 𝘽𝙊𝙎𝙎𝘽𝘼𝙇𝙄𝙏𝘼? is the second solo exhibition by 𝐒𝐨𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐚. It runs until March 14, 2026.
