Starting to make and sell commissions can be a lot of fun but also very tricky. Whether you want to sell it through Instagram or another platform, here are some of my tips: 1. communicate as much as possible, rather too much than too little. That way, you avoid misunderstandings and disappointments. So clearly state your own conditions in advance, agree on a concrete price and send lots of process photos and videos so that the buyer gets everything and can always indicate it if he / she / they want something different. This ensures that both parties are satisfied and happy when it is finished. 2. Create a portfolio or provide clear examples of what you have to offer! Commissions can come in different sizes, colours, yes-or-no background, etc. State what you can and cannot do for them and show examples at what you can do, so they can choose what best suits them and their reference. 3. Don’t take unrealistic commissions. Nobody wants to deliver work they are not satisfied with. For example, think of blurred references that buyers want to see displayed in a large format. If you feel in advance that it will be a difficult task, it is sometimes better to reject the commission. 4. This applies especially to portrait commissions; ask for multiple photos! Not because you are going to draw them all, but if you are in doubt at reference about the location of a mole, you can confirm on other photos whether it is there or not. 5. Trace! It’s not cheating! Especially not when you’re doing a commission, because commissions are entirely about the final result, not much about the progress. Tracing will help to make sure the drawing or painting is accurate. 6. Ask for partial payment up front. Not because you don’t trust your customers, but to have some protection of your own. Then, should something later go wrong with shipping or damage beyond your control, you can say that the customer gets the second part of the payment back, but the first part stays with the artist, for the time and materials that have already gone into the work. 7.
