The White House said Monday that President Donald Trump's signed his latest commutation in reaction to a "weaponization of justice" by the Biden administration. On the day before Thanksgiving, Trump commuted the prison sentence of former private equity executive David Gentile, who was only a couple of weeks into his seven-year sentence for defrauding investors. Gentile, the former CEO and co-founder of GPB Capital, was convicted last August on securities and wire fraud charges. Last year, prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York said the charges against Gentile and a co-defendant are "related to a years-long scheme to defraud more than 10,000 investors by misrepresenting the source of funds used to make monthly distribution payments and the amount of revenue generated by three of GPB’s investment funds." PBS News Hour's White House correspondent Liz Landers asked White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday why Trump commuted Gentile's sentence. "Unlike similar companies, GPB paid regular annualized distributions to its investors," Leavitt said. "In 2015, GPB disclosed to investors the possibility of using investor capital to pay some of these distributions rather than funding them from current operations. Even though this was disclosed to investors, the Biden Department of Justice claimed it was a Ponzi scheme."
