Receiving a compliment gracefully is a social *skill* It is not a test of humility or confidence. And how you respond matters more than people realize. Offering a compliment requires vulnerability. The other person is sharing their perception of you, and how you receive it determines whether that moment feels welcomed or dismissed. 1. Don’t: disagree with the compliment. Correcting someone who is offering praise does not come across as modest. It dismisses their pov and subtly undermines their taste. If someone appreciates your look, there is no need to take them down a notch by announcing that you usually look better or that you are about to get rid of “this old thing.” 2. Don’t: turn it into a performance. Comments like “I’m not even wearing any makeup today” or “I didn’t even try” shift the moment away from gratitude and toward self narration. They gave you a moment to shine, you don’t need to grab more. 3. Don’t: bounce it back immediately. Instantly returning a compliment is often well intentioned, but it interrupts the exchange and feels inauthentic, no matter how genuinely you feel it. If you would like to compliment them in return, take note of what they said about you. Was it a color, a detail, or something non physical such as your kindness or communication? When you offer your compliment later, mirror that same level of thoughtfulness. 4. Do: receive it with thanks. A compliment requires no explanation or qualification, just a thank you. It allows the moment to close cleanly, and indicates that you are comfortable in your skin. Gracefully receiving is knowing when (and how) to let something good stand as it is. Note on culture: this reflects American etiquette, wherein compliments are VERY common. In some cultures compliments are not the norm. In others, deflecting several times is considered polite. If you struggle to accept compliments, it is rarely about the compliment itself. When someone says something kind about you and your instinct is to dismiss it, joke it away, or feel uncomfortable, that reaction is often pointing to something deeper. At a core level, it can reflect a belief that you are not worthy of praise, that you have not earned it, or that if people really knew you, they would not say it at all. Low self esteem teaches the mind to distrust positive feedback. Compliments feel unfamiliar, even unsafe, because they conflict with the internal story you have been telling yourself for years. Instead of letting the words land, the brain rushes to correct them. Learning to accept a compliment is not about confidence or arrogance. It is about slowly challenging the belief that you are only allowed to be seen through your flaws. It is about practising neutrality, allowing yourself to simply say thank you, even if you do not fully believe it yet. Healing self esteem does not happen by forcing yourself to feel worthy overnight. It happens by noticing these small moments of discomfort and gently asking where they come from. Over time, those moments become opportunities to rewrite the story you hold about yourself.

Go compliment people. Make them feel genuinely seen. Yesterday I had a friend compliment me saying “You’re the only person that can’t offend me because I know whatever you’re saying is for my betterment” and that might be the greatest compliment I’ve heard. What he essentially said was that he believes I have no ill intentions and want what is best for him… which I do. It got me thinking about how often we actually compliment the people we love.
