Flat range training generally focuses on competency with your firearm. As you progress and your skills improve, you find yourself thinking less and less about how to shoot your gun because much of it has become a subconscious response to feedback. You’re not thinking about a reload or a stoppage or anything else, you just fix it and shoot it based on feedback. If you really think about it, how much brain power are you actually using when you’re at the range? It’s not until we venture outside of the flat range mentality do we recognize decision making and how our choices impact outcomes. I’ve run this drill with many people to evaluate their decision making. About 90% of them will plant their feet and shoot from that position without considering the things within their immediate environment that can help them. Decision making and tactics are probably the least discussed topics on social media and for good reason. Everyone has a different opinion on what you should do while others make up context to support their argument even though no context was provided. While there’s some value to the dialogue, much of it becomes toxic and inflammatory. The key to elevating your training is to also challenge your decision making and find ways to exploit your weaknesses. In many ways this can be viewed as an “experience” as much as simply training. In the early 20th century we got behaviorism. Pavlovian theory took root in the 1890’s and then exploded in popularity in the first half of the 20th century. As tech advanced neuroscience, stress and autonomic response have been studied & have become the major focus for learning & behavior in the last half of the 20th century. BUT this stayed primarily in research & advanced learning institutions. We have reached the point where this knowledge is reaching the general public & is being adapted to be taught to k-12 educators. It’s why trauma informed teaching has become so popular. Neuroscience, Psychologic Needs and Autonomic Function will now be at the helm of best practice- and good! Because learning how the brain and stress response works benefits EVERYONE! TTR is rooted in the 5 Needs: - Safety - Comfort - Autonomy - Belonging - Competency These are the 5 Needs that promote “optimal” neural and autonomic functioning- comment NEEDS to learn more. They are the perfect mix of 🧠 basic physiological ❤️ and psychological needs. In an era dominated by information, the role of journalism has never been more critical. Yet, we find ourselves grappling with the pervasive issues of bias and lack of competency within the field. This isn’t just a critique but a call to introspect and elevate the standards of journalism. Journalistic bias is a contentious topic. While some argue that bias is an inevitable human trait, others believe it undermines the very foundation of journalism, which is to present facts impartially. The reality is, when journalists allow their personal or political biases to color their reporting, they distort the truth and mislead the public. This not only erodes public trust but also polarizes society, creating echo chambers where individuals only consume news that aligns with their pre-existing beliefs. The duty of a journalist is to transcend these biases and strive for objectivity, providing the public with accurate and balanced information. Competency in journalism is equally crucial. A journalist’s responsibility is to inform the public, and this requires a deep understanding of the topics they cover, rigorous research skills, and the ability to critically analyze information. However, the pressures of the 24-hour news cycle, the race for breaking news, and the allure of sensationalism often lead to lapses in fact-checking, superficial coverage, and sometimes, the dissemination of false information. This undermines the credibility of the media and diminishes the quality of public discourse. The intersection of bias and lack of competency is particularly dangerous. When biased journalists lack the necessary skills to verify their information, they can easily fall prey to misinformation, which they then propagate to their audience. This cycle not only damages the reputation of individual journalists but also the integrity of the entire profession. To address these issues, there must be a concerted effort from within the industry. Media organizations should invest in continuous training for their journalists, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, fact-checking, and ethical reporting.
