Tips: Complementary colors —The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. —Mix them to get the secondary colors: green, orange, and purple. —The tertiary colors fall in between: red orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-purple, red-purple. —The color wheel moves from warm to cool. The hottest color is orange; the coldest color is blue. —Every color has a complement or opposite. The basic complements are red/green, blue/orange, and yellow/purple. —Tertiary colors (and every hue in between) has an opposite, too, such as blue-green/red-orange. These combinations can be more surprising. —When pairing complementary colors, one color can be brighter than the other, or one color can be dominant, and the other is an accent. —Near complements are slightly off center, such as red/yellow-green. —Split complements sit around a color’s direct opposite, such as red plus yellow-green and blue green. —Dull down a bright color by adding a bit of its complement. —Neutral colors are duller versions of pure hues. Brown tones are built from orange. Grays can contain red, blue, green, or yellow as well as black. This is one of the coolest and most valuable things to understand about colour theory. 🤓 Colours that are across the colour wheel from each other (also known as complementary colours) will produce a neutral grey as though you mixed black and white. 🩶 When I paint, I mix all my neutral tones (including almost-blacks and an array of greys) using the complementary colours. This way, I end up with greys that are more alive and dynamic than if I used black, which produces greys that are dull and less interesting.
