REPETITION AND TIMING In addition to using asymmetry, the second quality of curves used is repetition. Any time a similar curve or shape is repeated two or more times, it creates visual movement. In the diagram to the right, notice how three “C” curves placed next to one another start to push the eye from left to right. Using asymmetrical curves along with repeating curves gives your gesture drawings a solid sense of composition, fluidity, and timing. In the diagram, notice how repeating curves cause the eye to slow down as it moves through the dominant asymmetrical curves. Depending on the combinations of lines used, different visual experiences and speeds can be created. Fast and slow visual movements are very important in figure design at the gesture stage. Try slowing down the viewer’s eye by emphasizing repeating lines to create more side-to-side motion in complex areas such as intersections: midsection, shoulders, hips, knees, and elbows. Speed up the eye along the length of forms by using asymmetrical lines that push the movement downward. By playing one idea against another, your designs stay appealing and lifelike. You also give the viewer an experience closer to how we actually see. We scan at different speeds, lingering longer in some areas and quickly passing over others.
