Sergei Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 | Yunchan Lim One of the most thrilling transitions in the concerto repertoire. At the end of the second movement cadenza, the piano seems to pause for a brief moment, almost as if turning to the orchestra and asking, “are you ready?” Then suddenly, the third movement bursts in with unstoppable momentum. In an instant, the pianist pulls the entire orchestra forward, launching the music into a storm of energy and virtuosity. Can you believe this is a youth orchestra?! What a crispy sound… This 2014 live performance from Symphony Hall features the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under the baton of Benjamin Zander, delivering a scintillating rendition of the Overture to Mikhail Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila. Composed in 1842 and based on the 1820 epic poem by Alexander Pushkin, a pioneer of the Russian nationalist style. It tells the story of the abduction of Ludmila, the daughter of Prince Vladimir of the Kievan Rus’ (reigned 980–1015), by an evil wizard and the attempt by the brave knight Ruslan to find and rescue her. Mikhail Glinka (1804–1857) is the recognized father of Russian classical music, a composer who sought to create a distinct national identity away from Western European dominance. It looks so fun to play! The best part is seeing the tiny smiles on the faces of the players of the BPYO who clearly know they are crushing it. Obviously, the speed of this piece means ensemble precision, requiring the violin sections to maintain the tempo without sacrificing articulation. The piece follows a traditional sonata form, but it is the scintillating passage work in the strings and the heroic theme in the cellos and bassoons that make it so enticing. They absolutely nailed the performance, particularly the timpani dynamics. If this sounds familiar, maybe you heard this pacy melody as the theme music for the popular TV program Mom. The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, was founded by Benjamin Zander in 2012. I’m saddened to read that next June, after 48 years of championing the German Romantic canon—Beethoven, Bruckner, and Mahler—the ensemble will shut down permanently. Zander, now 87, has chosen to transition the organization into his own “Zander Center” rather than pass the baton to a successor. Such a shame, really… Anyways, let’s support more youth orchestras please! Curated by @violinarchives #benjaminzander #glinka #violin #bpyo #orchestra

J. Sibelius - Violin Concerto in D major 🎻🔥 | The Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 of Jean Sibelius, originally composed in 1904 and revised in 1905, is the only concerto by Sibelius. It is symphonic in scope and included an extended cadenza for the soloist that takes on the role of the development section in the first movement #violin #classicalmusic #sibelius #concerto #violinist

In 1991, the Wiener Philharmoniker and Sir Georg Solti performed Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, KV 626, at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. This was held on the exact 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death. A majestic achievement! Solti, stepping in for the late Karl Böhm (whose interpretation is also incredible, check it out if you have time), delivers a devilish beat, particularly in the Dies Irae, where the trumpets and organ create a sonic wall with such clarity. The part featured here is the Lacrimosa, around the 20’ mark. Sir Georg Solti (1912–1997), a Hungarian-British titan, was a conductor who held the record for the most Grammy Awards (31) for decades. His lineage traces back to studies with Bartók and Kodály. The vocal quartet—Arleen Augér, Cecilia Bartoli, Vinson Cole, and René Pape—is widely considered one of the greatest ever assembled for this work. I’d say their voices possess a dramatic “Verdian” weight, but still with precision Mozart requires. I recommend you listen to the whole piece: the woodwinds seem to mirror the soloists, the flutes guiding the sopranos, the oboes the altos, and the bassoons the basses, weaving a complex narrative through Mozart’s final masterpiece. Indeed, Mozart famously wrote this Requiem on his deathbed, commissioned by a “mysterious stranger,” and died before completing it (it was famously finished by his pupil Süssmayr). Bach knew what good music was since he loved Vivaldi’s music and decided to transcribe some concertos of him 🤌 if you haven’t listened to Bach’s transcriptions, you def should because he has written a lot of great ones which are nice to play as well 🤓 let me know in the comments who did it better 😝 . #classicalmusic #musicrecommendation #bach #vivaldi #concerto

#carminaburana #carlorff #concerto #musicaclassica #riccardomuti

“Piano Concerto Op. 83 No. 2 in B-flat major (mov. 2)“ by Brahms. This is what happens when Brahms forgets that he is in fact human… 😤🔥!! In this epic section of the second movement, this theme hits like a force of nature. The orchestra charges in with this bold, almost defiant theme, full of weight and authority. And then the piano enters—not timid, not reactive, but like it owns the moment, matching that intensity with sheer power and precision. It’s not a conversation… it’s a declaration. Brahms really said, “let’s push past limits” and never looked back.” . . . . . #brahms #pianochops #concerto

Via @obemditoumuarama #musica #concerto #violinista #finlândia #orquestasinfonicalahti
