I quit my job after I confided in a stranger in a New York City subway. I was so stressed about making a decision to keep my first job out of college, because I knew that I was lucky to even have one since international students had a tough time getting jobs due to our visa status. For months I was treated poorly and overworked. I was scared to leave my job because they had promised to sponsor me for a work visa. The fact that I had to ask for permission to leave the office was a red flag, but I didn’t know that. One day, I felt so down, that I ended up confiding in a stranger while waiting for a train in NYC. The train was delayed and I was sitting next to a woman who looked like she was in her early twenties as well. My heart sank because she confirmed to me the one thing I had avoided accepting - that I needed to leave my job, immediately. After I quit, I did very quickly find another job that was much more well balanced, and had a great relationship with my manager who advocated for me.
