That means no antibiotic drop (antibiotics are for bacteria!) will fix it, and piling on unproven remedies can actually irritate the eye and slow healing. More treatment does not mean better treatment, and we all know getting eye drops into kids is not the easist task, so for viral pink eye save your time money and energy. Should your child be on an antibiotic drop for pink eye? Pink eye has a lot of different causes -allergic, viral and bacterial. And antibiotics are only good for bacterial, which is responsible for about 60-70% of conjunctivitis. Bacterial conjunctivitis causes red eyes, with a lot of discharge, typically affecting both eyes, sometimes even causing the eyelids to be crusted shut. Antibiotic eye drops can help the symptoms improve faster, but studies haven’t actually shown a different in sigh threatening outcomes in people treated with antibiotics vs. not. Remember, antibiotic use, even in drop form is not without risk and your pediatrician can most definitely handle your child’s pink eye. Just because you weren’t given antibiotic drops does not mean anything wrong was done.
